Britain’s Johanna Konta was among the favourites to win the US Open title, but beat karolina Pliskova in a compelling match.
In her final BBC Sport pillar in New York, the Czech third goddess speaks about her exit at Flushing Meadows, why it hasn’t changed her perception she can win a Grand Slam – and her love for fishing.
I wouldn’t say this was another golden chance missed to finally win my first Grand Slam although Reduced to Johanna Konta was unsatisfactory.
I played an opponent who has been fourth in the world, therefore it was always likely to be difficult, and she played with the best with.
And even if I had won, I’d have played Serena Williams, and also possibly Elina Svitolina from the semi-finals, therefore there would not be an easy game between today and the closing.
This was not a dream draw for me personally, although the first couple of games were somewhat more easy than they they could be. I’m still sure I have the sport although the standard is so high from the game of the women – that remains the goal.
I played solid – it was not a disaster and it was just nothing . I really could do better.
Resulting by a set and a rest meant it was, obviously, a chance like I overlooked match points but it isn’t – it was all the way through the game.
Immediately after having a game I don’t feel mad. You own a lot of emotion and anxiety during a tournament as soon as you lose similar to those emotions are abruptly lifted, it is.
It’s challenging to talk about positives because I really don’t see any.
It was my best game of the championship but sometimes when somebody plays as well as Johanna did it isn’t enough. She played with more competitive than our other games, although I’d beaten on Johanna in six of our seven meetings at tour degree.
She said until she believed because I beat her in the Open final in 19, she’d improved – and now I think she was 50 times greater!
What impressed me was how she went for her shots a tiny bit more, because normally I believe she moans more for mistakes by her competitor, or plays crosscourt, however she moved for every shot and plenty of times she struck the line. She had been brave and it paid off.
She also served very well, particularly in the third place that I was one match and when she was behind on serve. She did a fantastic job by putting the pressure back to me along with serving under stress.
I’d say it was her very best game of the tournament up to now, but it is hard to say how far she can go.
She’s attained this portion of a Grand Slam a few times today, and semi-finals, but I’m not sure if she can go on to win it because Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka remain in the draw, while Elina will be demanding in the next round.
I will not see the rest of the tournament because of the time difference – I’m flying back to Prague right away – and there is.
While I reach Prague I’ll take time because the month has been long and I have not had many days away. I will think about my plan, and the Asia swing later this month, which starts.
My twin sister Kristyna is back into the Czech Republic as we are away a lot so we’ll spend time, and I will head house .
I’ll also get to see that our little sister – she is six and begins college this week. She’s very excited about that. She’s extremely clever, I believe more than most six-year-olds, so she enjoy it and must do well at school.
I wish I was still going to be here in New York all week, but it will be nice to see her going for her first week to college .
Other than that, I’ll be sleeping, purchasing and doing all the regular stuff – but I doubt I will have time to fishing, that is one of my favourite hobbies!
I enjoy fresh water fishing a good deal. The Czech Republic has no coast so that I fish in lakes, ponds or rivers.
So I’ve one of these, you will need a licence to fish although I went fishing in the Seychelles and Miami to try various things and I know there.
My father is a big fan of fishing – that’s where I get my love in – and he tries to educate me how when we go. However, no fish is caught by me!
If you wish to capture fish then it’s easier since you might possibly catch one every 20 or 30 minutes, but if you want to go for larger weights you have to be sitting there for hours and hours – maybe all evening.
It’s a relaxing pastime. I really don’t have my cellphone on when I’m fishing as you will need to be quiet and concentrated, so it can be helpful for the part.
I need to go fishing longer, After my tennis career is finished, but for the moment I only have one or two days off every now and then I don’t get the chance.
