You win a World Cup quarter-final by sticking on 40 points onto a team and individuals begin – of where of this may end. Folks look and people start to fantasy.
Which is why the stuff that was mentioned over Australia in the wake of Englands 40-16 win came in captain Owen Farrell, since he held his group outside on the Oita pitch after the conclusion of it all.
Its low-key, that. It is 40 points – 40 points! Dont let it take anything this match, out of you. Next week because it was a superb performance, and its coming . And its going to be better.
Farrell has been preternaturally mature, red-blooded when the tackles come flying in but chilly and unencumbered with fear and uncertainty in those modest moments that are silent when others wobble and crack.
And so he held on to what lots of other Englishmen were letting go and let fly. A major step forward but one that has to be followed by other people. Maintain back something, because a quarter-final in its own is not anything.
The thousands of white-shirted England fans flowing back towards ramen-shops and the bars of Beppu and Oita skipped into next week all the same. A margin of victory would be Englands largest in a World Cup knockout game. Never have Australia dropped heavily at this stage or beyond. Have they lost to England by a margin.
Points that are forty feels like domination. It seems one-sided. So the most impressive element of Englands victory was by ripping them aside, by keeping the Wallabies as that they pulled it off much.
England had roughly the same of territory and just a third of their possession. Once Marika Koroibete skinned Elliot Daly about the exterior like a big brother breezing past his child cousin yet just for a few brief moments at the start of the second half, did they ever look in any kind of trouble.
World champions New Zealand have created a tradition of winning without much of this chunk. Its all about striking when youve got it rather than holding when its sideways and slow.
England absorbed all Australia can throw at them, which was a substantial amount at the minutes of each half. In two spells they felled gold-shirted runners with the type of enjoyment which makes defence trainers dab off a tear that was joyful.
The stats from the end were notable in any sport, let alone one won. Twenty tackles 18 out of Mako Vunipola, from Sam Underhill. 17 from Farrell, also Jamie George.
No England participant in World Cup history had made over 16 in one game. Tom Curry left 16 and just sneaked into the top five in this match.
Farrell was ideal. It was a brilliant performance, way more detailed than Englands win over the exact opponents in the identical point in Marseille 12 years ago, less nervous than the quarter-final triumph over Wales on the march to the glory farther back.
The grinds France from 2003 and 2007s semi-finals were glorious feats of all match management and cussedness. This was more adorable and quicker and much more relaxing .
It was also not flawless. They gave off six fines in the first half, which allowed Christian Lealiifano to keep his team in touch when their daring approach kept introducing England with all the most generous of offerings.
This is a team that England had beaten six times. In each of the three years that they also have placed at least 18 second-half points around Michael Cheikas men.
This was a Wallabies team that lacked the capability to play with with the old-fashioned cavalier Aussie manner that Cheika demanded.
Sometimes a straightforward kick-exit is a great idea. Waiting and sometimes tucking the ball is flinging around it with expect that is wide-eyed, by taking two steps particularly whenever possession is currently slowing down.
You would take one which required in a Argentina, USA, Tonga and a group you have cantered past if you could choose a route into a World Cup semi-final.
But there was much that was correct as attractive because it does intimidating, that the All Blacks roadblock forward next Saturday looks.
Curry and Underhill, dated 21 and 23 respectively, have just 30 caps between then. Michael Hooper and david Pocock, 27 and 31, have a combined total of 182. It was the kamikaze kids who won this battle, as Farrells display – eight off the tee, a pass of sweet timing to send Kyle Sinckler crashing out in Manu Tuilagi fashion for the dent that ceased the comeback dead in its tracks – justified Eddie Jones choice to drop George Ford to the bench and change his skipper inside.
The only error Curry made all day attempted to shake off the hand of the girl presenting his champagne to him. Therell be a lot of others pleased to bow down to 18, When he keeps this level up.
Farrell has scored 154 points against Australia, more than northern hemisphere player. The former record was held by Jonny Wilkinson, and most of us remember how that ended.
That is an tight five that can do all the things that tight fives that are older take, and also could do and energy and step as others might not have imagined. There is menace and rate on the wings from Anthony Watson and Jonny May and a thickness on the bench that claims greater still.
Farrell developed in its heart and grew up in rugby. He understands, as does anybody who watched the entire world champions demolition of Ireland, what would go wrong. He knows, furthermore, what should come next.
